Code is Poetry

Anyone else out there into both poetry of various sorts and coding? Well, we are and we love the WordPress slogan “Code is Poetry” and wholeheartedly agree. I’ve written all kinds of lines, and being one who tends to favor meter and formalism, my poetic lines and my scripting lines tend to require the same amount of … well, I’m not sure what to call it, but they’re similar. One of the things I do like about free verse is that it can be composed all willy nilly and let itself be dictated by sound, thought, odd sorts of line breaks, or whatever suits the poet’s fancy. Formal verse doesn’t allow for this, and that’s one of the things I like about that. Writing a metrical poem is like solving a puzzle while creating, and it’s much more like scripting, imho.

Anyway, why are we talking about this? Well, it’s time for some changes on this site. If you’ve read the previous post about the slowness we’ve run into lately, then this won’t come as a surprise. I’m not saying it will happen today or tomorrow, but soon, lots of changes are coming to this site, particularly the WordPress theme. Like buying clothes, we may try on lots of new themes until we find one that fits. We really liked this one, but apparently there are several aspects of it that augment the slowness of our server, and we just can’t have that continue … not when viewership of the site is steadily increasing and we may actually do something to promote the site soon That would just be horrible … promoting the site only to have half the new visitors abandon and hanging page load never to return.

Eventually we’re planning on writing our own Wprdpress theme … because we like that sort of thing and agree Code is indeed poetry. But for now, we’ll just keep trying on new themes until we find one that suits both our aesthetic preferences and the functionality of this site with all it’s mixed up subjects of poetry, Auburn, gaming, and all the things that fall in between. We tend to prefer a minimalist structure, but we also like to see a nice arrangement or composition of thumbnail images. Got any recommendations? Got any sites you think might fit the bill for what we’re looking for here? Leave a comment … or a link to the site … we’d very much appreciate any feedback.
